IMPORTANT: THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE

Precedent is an AI-powered legal research and information platform. We do NOT provide legal advice, legal opinions, or legal representation. The information provided through our Services is for general informational and educational purposes only. You should always consult with a qualified attorney before making any legal decisions.

1. Nature of Our Services

Precedent is a technology platform that uses artificial intelligence to analyze legal situations by comparing them to historical Singapore court cases. Our Services are designed to help users understand how courts have historically ruled in cases with similar fact patterns.

What we provide: Our platform offers AI-powered case analysis that identifies relevant legal precedents, extracts patterns from historical court decisions, and presents statistical observations about case outcomes. We provide factual information about how Singapore Courts have ruled in past cases.

What we do NOT provide: We do not provide legal advice, legal opinions, legal strategy recommendations, or legal representation. We do not tell you what you should do, what your chances of success are, or how a court will rule in your specific case.

3. No Attorney-Client Relationship

Your use of Precedent does NOT create an attorney-client relationship. Precedent is not a law firm. Our employees, contractors, and affiliates are not acting as your attorneys. We do not represent you in any legal matter.

3.1 You Are a "User," Not a "Client"

When you use Precedent directly (not through a law firm portal), you are a "user" of our technology platform. The term "client" implies an attorney-client relationship, which does not exist between you and Precedent. We deliberately use the term "user" to maintain this important distinction.

3.2 No Confidentiality Privilege

Because no attorney-client relationship exists, the information you provide to Precedent is NOT protected by attorney-client privilege. While we take data security seriously (see our Privacy Policy), the legal protections that apply to communications with your attorney do not apply to your communications with Precedent.

3.3 No Duty of Representation

We have no duty to represent your interests, advocate on your behalf, or take any action to protect your legal rights. These are duties that attorneys owe to their clients, and they do not apply to the relationship between you and Precedent.

4. AI Technology Limitations

Precedent uses artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to analyze legal situations. While these technologies are powerful tools, they have significant limitations that you must understand.

4.1 AI Can Make Mistakes

AI systems, including large language models (LLMs), can produce inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading outputs. They may "hallucinate" information that sounds plausible but is incorrect. They may misunderstand your questions or situation. They may fail to identify relevant factors or cases.

4.2 Pattern Recognition, Not Understanding

AI models are pattern recognition systems. They do not "understand" legal concepts, facts, or context in the way a human does. Their analysis is based on statistical correlations in data, not on legal reasoning or judgment.

4.3 Training Data Limitations

Our AI models are trained on historical data that may not reflect current legal standards, recent court decisions, or emerging legal trends. The law evolves constantly, and our AI may not be aware of the most recent developments.

4.4 Similarity Scores Are Approximations

The similarity scores and confidence levels we provide are mathematical approximations based on pattern matching algorithms. They represent how closely your described situation matches historical cases in our database, not the likelihood of a particular outcome. A high similarity score does not mean your case will have the same outcome as the historical case.

4.5 Context Limitations

Our AI can only analyze the information you provide. It cannot ask clarifying questions the way a human attorney would. It may miss important nuances, context, or facts that would be obvious to a human professional. The quality of the analysis depends entirely on the completeness and accuracy of the information you provide.

5. Case Database Limitations

5.1 Incomplete Coverage

Our case database, while extensive, does not include every Singapore court decision. Many cases are not reported or published. Some cases may be missing from our database due to technical limitations or data availability. The absence of similar cases in our database does not mean such cases do not exist.

5.2 Data Accuracy

While we strive for accuracy, our case summaries, extracted legal principles, and outcome classifications may contain errors. Cases may be miscategorized, key facts may be omitted, or legal principles may be oversimplified. Always verify important information by reviewing the original court judgments.

5.3 Appeals and Reversals

Court decisions may be appealed, reversed, overturned, or distinguished by subsequent cases. Our database may not always reflect these developments. A case that appears favorable to your situation may have been overturned on appeal or may no longer represent good law.

5.4 Jurisdictional Scope

Our database focuses on Singapore court cases. If your legal matter involves other jurisdictions, foreign law, or international elements, our analysis may be incomplete or inapplicable. Singapore law may differ significantly from the law in other countries.

5.5 Time Sensitivity

Laws change over time. A case decided ten years ago may have been decided differently under current law. Statutory amendments, new regulations, and evolving judicial interpretations may affect the relevance of historical cases to your current situation.

6. Appropriate Use of Precedent

Precedent is designed to be used as a research and educational tool. Appropriate uses include:

Preliminary Research: Understanding the general legal landscape before consulting with an attorney.

Educational Purposes: Learning about how Singapore Courts have historically approached certain types of cases.

Preparation for Legal Consultation: Organizing your thoughts and understanding relevant terminology before meeting with a lawyer.

Identifying Relevant Precedents: Finding historical cases that may be relevant to your situation for discussion with your attorney.

Understanding Potential Outcomes: Gaining perspective on the range of outcomes in similar historical cases.

Informing Settlement Discussions: Understanding historical case outcomes to inform (not determine) settlement negotiations.

7. Inappropriate Use of Precedent

The following uses of Precedent are inappropriate and may lead to serious harm:

Substitute for Legal Advice: Using our analysis as a replacement for professional legal advice from a qualified attorney.

Making Legal Decisions: Basing important legal decisions solely on our analysis without consulting an attorney.

Self-Representation: Using our analysis to represent yourself in court without understanding its limitations.

Predicting Outcomes: Treating our similarity scores or outcome patterns as predictions of how your case will be decided.

Missing Deadlines: Relying on our analysis instead of consulting an attorney, potentially missing important legal deadlines (limitation periods, filing deadlines, etc.).

Providing Legal Advice: Using our analysis to provide legal advice to others when you are not a qualified attorney.

Urgent Matters: Using our Services for time-sensitive legal matters that require immediate professional attention.

8. Seek Professional Legal Advice

Strong Recommendation

We strongly recommend that you consult with a qualified attorney before making any legal decisions or taking any legal action. An attorney can provide personalized advice based on your specific circumstances, applicable law, and professional judgment.

8.1 When to Consult an Attorney

You should consult an attorney: (a) before taking any legal action; (b) when you receive legal documents or court papers; (c) when you are considering entering into significant contracts; (d) when you are involved in a dispute that may lead to litigation; (e) when you need to understand your legal rights and obligations; and (f) whenever you are uncertain about the legal implications of a situation.

8.2 Finding Legal Help

If you need legal assistance, you can: (a) contact the Law Society of Singapore for lawyer referrals; (b) seek assistance from legal aid organizations if you qualify; (c) use our specialist referral feature to connect with qualified attorneys; or (d) contact law firms directly.

8.3 Legal Aid Resources

If you cannot afford legal representation, resources are available including: the Legal Aid Bureau (for civil matters), the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (for criminal matters), and various pro bono legal clinics operated by law schools and community organizations.

9. Law Firm Portal Exception

The disclaimers in this document apply to users who access Precedent directly. Different considerations apply when you access our Services through a law firm's white-label portal.

9.1 Law Firm Relationship

When you access Precedent through a law firm's portal and engage that law firm's services, an attorney-client relationship may be established between you and that law firm (not Precedent). In this context, you may be referred to as a "client" of the law firm, and the law firm may provide legal advice based on our analysis.

9.2 Law Firm Responsibility

When legal advice is provided through a law firm portal, the law firm—not Precedent—is responsible for that advice. The law firm's professional obligations, terms of engagement, and malpractice insurance apply to the legal services they provide. Precedent remains a technology provider in this context.

9.3 Terminology in Law Firm Context

Within law firm portals, the language may differ from our direct platform. Terms like "client," "legal advice," and "recommendation" may be used because the law firm is providing professional legal services. This does not change Precedent's role as a technology platform.

10. No Guarantees or Warranties

10.1 No Outcome Guarantees

We make no guarantees about the outcome of any legal matter. Past case outcomes do not predict future results. Every case is decided on its own facts and circumstances. A case that appears similar to yours may have a completely different outcome due to factors not captured in our analysis.

10.2 No Accuracy Guarantees

We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of our analysis, case summaries, similarity scores, or any other information provided through our Services. While we strive for accuracy, errors may occur.

10.3 No Suitability Guarantees

We do not guarantee that our Services are suitable for your particular needs or circumstances. You are responsible for determining whether our Services are appropriate for your situation.

11. Your Responsibility

By using Precedent, you accept full responsibility for:

Your Decisions: Any decisions you make based on information from our Services, including the decision to pursue or not pursue legal action.

Verification: Independently verifying any information you obtain from our Services before relying on it.

Professional Consultation: Seeking appropriate professional legal advice for your specific situation.
